SustainaBEANS

The SustainaBEANS Program is a JAWI initiative that integrates conservation practices with community-based economic activities, particularly through coffee as a key commodity. This program was developed מתוך an understanding that the agricultural sector plays a strategic role in maintaining ecosystem balance, especially in areas with high biodiversity value such as the Kemuning Forest. Through this approach, JAWI seeks to ensure that coffee production is not solely driven by economic outcomes, but also contributes to long-term environmental sustainability.

In its implementation, the SustainaBEANS Program emphasizes environmentally friendly land management through a participatory approach involving local communities. Various activities have been carried out, including assessments of the impacts of chemical fertilizers and herbicides, training on organic fertilizer production, and the application of sustainable farming practices in demonstration plots. This approach not only enhances community capacity to manage land in an ecologically sound manner, but also encourages behavioral shifts toward more environmentally responsible agricultural practices.

On the other hand, SustainaBEANS also creates opportunities for the development of sustainable coffee-based creative economies. The program focuses not only on production, but also on strengthening the value chain, including processing, marketing, and the development of derivative coffee products. With support such as business plan development and marketing strategies, coffee from Kemuning Village has the potential to compete in broader markets. Ultimately, this program serves as a tangible example of how conservation and economic development can go hand in hand, delivering ecological benefits while improving community livelihoods.
