The Javan Wildlife Institute (JAWI) is a science-based non-profit organization established in Indonesia in 2016. JAWI was born from a collective concern regarding the increasing intersection between human activities and wildlife on the island of Java, which is predicted to pose significant challenges to natural resources and ecosystems in the future. While our primary focus is contributing to conservation efforts—both in modifying and maintaining ecosystems—within Java, we remain open to extending our impact and benefits to conservation initiatives throughout Indonesia.
“All the species and systems of nature deserve respect regardless of their usefulness to humanity.” – Conservation for a New Era, IUCN.
The conservation paradigm shifts year by year, evolving into a stage where environmental ethics must be translated into decisive action. At its core, conservation reflects the specific values that individuals and societies hold regarding nature and the human-nature relationship. Citing Jeffrey and Susan (2009), conservation ethics have been enshrined in religions for centuries, and the link between nature and spirituality is well-recognized. In alignment with this, we believe that all species and natural systems deserve respect, regardless of the scale of their utility to humanity.
In 2019, the world experienced a global environmental wake-up call through the COVID-19 pandemic. This crisis had a significant impact on various sectors, including conservation. COVID-19 represents an additional challenge that demands a response as we simultaneously navigate social and economic development, climate change, and biodiversity loss.
Considering these factors, Lembaga Jawi Indonesia (JAWI) actively contributes to government and global initiatives to address social-economic development, climate change, and biodiversity management. We carry out these efforts with high spirits through key activities in the sectors of Science, Business, and Conservation Media. We are optimistic that our designed strategies and programs adhere to established principles while supporting social and economic recovery in the post-pandemic era.
The support and cooperation of various partners and stakeholders are the driving forces behind JAWI's activities. Therefore, we express our deepest gratitude to all partners, donors, the board of supervisors, the executive board, and management who have supported and guided us toward achieving contemporary conservation goals. We hope that our existing collaborations will endure as we work together toward a Lush and Sustainable Indonesia.
